Wired in my 4 pole voltage regulator as you instructed using the L terminal. I still need to buy a new 6 volt battery to polarize generator and try it all out. I still have one more question regarding the amp meter. One post on the amp meter in wired to the BAT terminal on the VR. The other post on the amp meter is wired to the starter/battery. The posts on my amp meter are marked + and -. Does it matter which wire goes to which post? If backwards would it just show a discharge rather than charging? Thank you for your help.

Bob, YES it matters how the ammeter is wired (its polarity sensitive) and I agree with Jim if its wired bass ackwards, it will register incorrect, but a simple wire swap will cure the problem. Regardless, ONLY one wire connects to what I call the Supply side, the hot ungrounded battery post often via the starter switch terminal, while the ammeters other Load terminal wires to the BAT terminal on a VR or Cutout Relay PLUSSSSS feeds alllll loads like lights n ignition UNLESS one uses a 4 wire VR, in which case loads are served by the L terminal.

If you turn lights or ignition on not running the ammeter (if wired correct) shoud swing to the - discharge direction.

Thanks for your help. I've got it to what I believe is correct with the 4 wire VR. I am using the L terminal to power the lights. I will stop by Advance Auto Parts for a new 6 volt battery. I called after work tonight and they have one in stock for $42. If it would happen to be backwards when I try the lights I'll just switch the wires on the ammeter posts around. Good to know no harm would be done though too. Thanks fellows and I'll let you all know how it works out. Bob

If connected wrong, it will do no harm. Take the meter in your hand and use a jumper to the bat non-ground terminal, and one of the meter posts. then touch the other meter post to the back of a headlamp. If the meter goes discharge (left) it is correct that way. JimN
