My son has a 656 that is stuck in reverse. How does he go about getting it back in to nuetral? The lever just falls down as soon as he lets go of it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Boyd,,,,, ,,,,, ,,,

Hugh; Thanks for your earlier reply. My son went out and looked at it and the pin was in the shaft OK. Do you any more ideas that he could try? He thinks he is going to have to take that platform off and see what he can see inside. Many Thanks Hugh..... ..... ....Boyd

Boyd: Will the shaft slide through it's normal pattern to align with each of the shift linkages? Next, I believe you mentioned if he lets go of the shift lever it will flop down on brake pedals. Correct me if I'm right or wrong on that one? That being the case, the problem has to be in the shaft, pin or linkages. That pin and shaft had to be replaced on my 656 before it was 5 years old. By now many of these could be worn where the shaft goes through the linkage selector. Indeed after 35 years a lot of items could be worn that I didn't experience, although I did put 15,000 hours on my 656.

The deciding factor for me on whether to take off the platform, would be to watch those selector linkages above the battery to see if they are operating in sinc with the shift lever. If they are then problem must be below platform.

When I did my tractor, I replaced pin and shaft only. I do know there has been a repair kit from IH since then, how much more than pin and shaft are included I'm not sure.

Boyd: At the base of the shift lever there is a shaft that goes across above the battery. That shaft slides endways as well as turns Above the battery you will see linkages that go to transmission. When in neutral they all line up. There is a pin protrudes out of shaft about 1/4" each side. As the shaft slides from right to left that pin lines up with each one of those linkages, one at a time. That pin has become worn and fallen out. You will probably find it on or around the battery.

There are two spots on that linkage where pin can be put back in place. You just have line the hole on shaft to suit. Putting it back will only be a temporary fix. What you need is a new pin and shaft, or that was the case 35 years ago. I understand CaseIH has a rebuild kit today. It's probably going to spoil $100.
