Could someone explain to me why there are so many different decals for the same farmall. I am speaking of the big decal that goes on the hood that normally says stuff like McCormick and Farmall. Why do some of them say Deering and others not?

Guy Fay's book states that in the mid 1940's IH did some marketing/tradename research on brand name recognition and it was determined that niether McCormick, Deering or McCormick-Deering really mattered to folks so they just simplified it and dropped the Deering. So the answer to your question is that depending on the year of your tractor, you would have to have the early set of decals in order for your tractor to be authentically restored (if there is such a thing).

Something about an agreement dropping the Deering name when the last orginial Deering died, I believe, or something similar to that. Could have been some disagreements between the McCormicks and the Deerings. Someone else should have the details. In brief the name Farmall was used because the name implied "Farm all" -- in other words it was a general purpose tractor. Cyrus McCormick and (I forget the first name) Deering were the top dogs in a company they named International Harvester. The names reached their peak in the mid 40's with "IH McCormick Deering Farmall". The Deering was dropped in 1949, McCormick was eventually dropped, the year I don't know. Understandably confusing to many people, not to those who grew up with Farmalls.

Should also mention the Farmall itself was dropped in the late 70's?, and everything was simply International, until CIH decided to bring back Farmall on a line of red New Holland compact tractors.

Apparently the boys at IH knew that someday their would be a bunch of us idiots collecting their tractors, and they decided that they would give us some reasons to argue about what decal is correct for what year. I would say they did a pretty good job.

An evil plot for the future! They knew would we have to buy 3 or 4 sets of decals before we got the right ones! A world domination plot, if I"ve ever heard one!
