Farmall A Cooling System

Just bought a 1940 A and was curious about the cooling system. I've taken off the radiator and flushed it and the motor, backflushed and cleaned the crud out of the bottom inlet from the block to the lower hose. The 4 nickel sized holes in the block look to be clear. The system should be fairly clean unless the radiator itself is clogged. When I run the tractor for fifteen minutes or so (not under any load), and then turn it off. The radiator will belch and gurgle, aometimes with a minor amount of radiator fluid coming out of the overflow. Just wanted to know if this is normal for a thermo-syphon system in 97 degree weather or is it running too hot. With the tractor running and the radiator cap off, I can't tell if the the water is circulating or not. Clogged radiator or something else?

thanks for all the good advise everyone. From what it sounds like, I may have put a little too much coolant in the radiator and it didn"t have room to expand, now I"m off to buy a temp gauge. thanks again.

stick a temp guage reading in numbers should read around 170 when warmed up good. you did the rite thing by cleaning out the block as lots of get plugged in the nickle sized holes. is the overflow tube clean so whe water expands it can go out the overflow.

Brad: The gurgling and bubbling is quite normal for a thermosyphon cooling system. You can reduce this by letting the tractor idle 2-3 min. after being at working temperature. This system relies very heavily on the fan cooling the liquid with tractor not under load for that few min.

I have a Super A, very original cooling system, it's never been flushed in the past 25 years. Been drained a few times, for changing coolant, other work on tractor, etc. It has been gurgling and bubbling at shut down for at least 33 years, and I suspect 53 years would be more accurate.

The radiator could be stopped up, but, a thermo syphon system operates on its own at about 180 degrees. So there has to be sufficent expansion room in the upper radiator tank. The radiators had what appeared to be a tube down into the tank and the water level was to be about half way up in there. Then when you looked in there at operating temp the water would be raising and falling, and it would gurgle and make noises running or not. Don't add water until it gets down to the tubes, and if it gets down to the tubes pretty quick you probably have stopped up radiator.

the best way i know how to explain the thermo-siphon is its basicly like a perculator coffee pot so that gurgler is pretty much normal i have three of the A and superA tractors and all do the same thing

HI I have a Case 530ck. I had the radiator out and flushed everything out. It did that for a while I guess till all the air was worked out. It has been fine since and I have used it quite hard with no problem.
