two days ago i took appart my 1948 H and found that it has Conformatic pistons in it and while putting one of them up to my new fire craters I had noticed the top of the piston looked the same. Another bit of info X1 ate the end of a serial number is higher compression started I think around 1942.

IH came out with fire crater pistons in late 1959 or earley 1960.

Farmall never put Firecrater pistons in a H at the factory. Firecrater pistons were offered after market through IH dealers after Heisler and M&W offered them to farmers to increase the power of their tractors, and to utilize the higher octain of the gasoline of the time.

i think your wrong what about the tractor,s that were shipped to hi altitude arias?i would agree that it was a term that was not used till the early 50,s. most after market kit,s were very crude with sharp edges on top, were the IH sets had all the edges rounded for better flame travel.then agin never had trouble with a set of M and W,s they allways worked well, just a thought

Les is correct. The high altitude pistons were different from the fire craters.
