On the spur of the moment, myself and 3 other antique tractor guys here in town got invited to each bring a tractor to the "Trucks, Trucks, Trucks" event one morning this week.

This event is a joint effort by the town library summer children's program and the highway dept. It brings DPW trucks and equipment to the town hall parking lot for kids to inspect, sit on, etc.

Somewhat to our surprise the 4 antique tractors (2 each Farmall and John Deere) received more attention than did the DPW snow plow, sucker truck, grader, frontloader, etc. We had kids (and more than a few adults...) lined up to perch on the tractors over the entire two hour duration.

Neat little show!

Bob: Kind of reminds me of the days when we had an on farm vegetable market. Marg. always asked to have the Super A parked out front. This all got started after I came in one day with a trailer load of sweet corn, and decided to let folks pick out their corn right from the trailer. Little boys and to a lesser extent little girls nornally never that patient with mom's vegetable shopping, spent countless hours behind the wheel of a Super A. There was one young lad in particular I remember, his mom was an active school teacher, and Marg. retired from the same staff, thus her stops were more about school shop talk than vegetables. I swear she could have stayed 5 hours and that young lad would have been happy on the Super A. I bet he'll be another Wardner.

Y'know Hugh, I never could figure out why they put the pedals so far away.

All those kids on shiny red tractors reminds me of the childhood trips we used to make to the Museum of Science and Industry on the south side of Chicago. The McCormicks were board memebers and major contributers to that outstanding institution. Consequently, there was always half a dozen new IH tractors displayed in the main lobby. I used to sample them all.

This happened in the early fifties. Seeing as I was a city boy living on the North Side and rarely saw any agricultural activity, I have to assume those promotions are the root cause for my owning red tractors.

We lived in a high rise facing the Oak Street Beach (near the venerable Drake Hotel). A high ranking city offical also lived there. Several times a week, a motorcycle cop mounted on a Harley-Davidson, would be stationed ahead of a limo directly in front of the entrance canopy. While I don't have a collection of Cadillacs, I do have a few antique Harleys.

I wonder how many of those kids in your album will be buying antique tractors 30 years from now. We will need to sell to someone and I am glad you made the effort to show your red machines.
