Howdy all, First post here, but have enjoyed what a friendly bunch of folks share their know how. Anyway, I just got a 300u and have been fixing as things break. The leak I'd like to fix is on the bottom of the power steering. The shop manual (If I'm reading correctly) shows this are as the "Shims". The bolt heads here have retention tabs. Is it OK to just tighten them? Can some gaskets be cut? It appears to have two of these shim plates. If I remove, will all kinds of clean parts bounce off my trousers and into the dirt at my feet where I'll never find them?

What you are describing sounds like the plate/shims underneath the steering cylinder rack. Two bolts in the center of plate and four bolts holding plate. There is a pad fastened to the plate with the two bolts, the shims go between plate and pad. This is the adjustment for the mesh of the steering rack. Nothing will fall out, but you might just try tightening the bolts. Let us know how it goes !

Are you sure the expansion plug is not rusted out or damaged? I had one leaking real bad and it turned out to be the plug in the bottom of the housing. I put an automotive freeze plug in it and all was well.
And...you are right...better stand on an old bed sheet when you take it apart...those bearings can go all over the place.

Boy, I didn't check for a plug on the bottom. All the further I looked was the rectangle plates on the bottom which had the fluid on them, but I certainly will check for that plug in a day or two when I can get back out and work on the beast (alternator conversion) Thanks for the idea. If I do end up haveing to take those plates off you say the berrings resting on them will fall...I don't like the looks of this.

Piece of cake...after the first 4 tries. Put heavy grease on the race and set the balls in place.
Get yourself an IT manual and have at it. Heck...if I can do it I know you can.
Have fun with it.....

Yes, the area of fluid is the rack adjustment plate. According to my IT manual it's an "earlier" model. Came from the factory with one 1/4" plate and as the manual says, another 1/4" plate was added. It appears, from the outside, that there are four bolts in the corners holding it in place. The picture in the manual leads me to believe that If I pull the bolts and drop the plates I'll get some fluid to come out...Any idea how much Hy-Trans I'll be trying to catch? And after it's all cleaned up and I've had a chance to grab a sandwich, would I be better off using form a gasket between the plates, and housing, or should I take my gasket sheet and cut some. It would seem to me that I don't really want to add thickness to this area. The other thing I was wondering is what is the differnence between one and two plates here. Unless they are stepped inside the case to make the rack tighter, or maybe they are not flat on one side... It's curently a mystery to me, but I'll find out soon what it's all about.
Thank you all for the help.

You'll loose a little fluid, maybe a half pint or less, as gearbox only holds a little over a quart. Since yours only has one plate you need to lay a straight edge across it to check for flatness. The single plates have a tendency to bend in the middle and my guess it that's the main problem. After straightening plate(if needed), clean the shims & all sealing surfaces with brake or carb cleaner. I use something called "Loctite 510 Flange Sealant" on the shims & sealing surfaces. It will not affect the adjustment. Bolt it back together and see if it leaks. If the clearance between rack and pad needs adjustment, send me an email and I'll try to help.

I don't think you will loose that much fluid...there is fluid in the bottom too...that is where mine was leaking.
I hav been able to get gaskets, bearings and the dowel pin that is always worn from CIH. I don't like that form a gasket stuff...never had much luck with it.
I know also it's a hassle getting that unit off. You have to remove the entire dash assembly, but it sure makes it easier working on the thing.
I have two of them to fix. One on a 350U and a 300U. I have just been putting it off.
Take your time...you will do fine.

Bill 46, I think we may be in different parts of the steering. I'm on the bottom under the rack, I think you are behind the dash up on the steering column itself....However, I may be on my way up if that is indeed where the fluid is coming from... brian

Yep...if by rack you mean the gear box on the bottom...it's all together. That is where mine was leaking too. The expansion plug was rusted thru from water getting in there over the years.
