I found a smta that has been converted from lp to gas. I was wondering if there is anyway to tell (by serial number etc) if it orginally was lp or was initially gas then lp then converted back to gas.

The SMTA"s on "factory" lp were converted in Lubbock, Texas for Harvester Co. I have been told there were around 500 made this way. The tank is looks somewhat different, lower and longer than ones I have seen that were converted in the field.

If you can provide a picture some people who know more than I do can help you out.

That is my 2-cents worth.

Engine and/or chassis suffixes of C or N indicate original LPG engines. I do not know if these letters were used on all factory LPG tractors, though.

Don't think there's anyway to tell 100% for sure by serial # since none came dirrect from IH as LP. One clue is that some sent to be converted have is letter D or E following engine and tractor serial numbers. They were equiped with high alltitude pistons for higher compression with the LP gas. Not a 100% sure way though because gasoline tractors could be that way to.
