Ok,
Approximately 5 months ago I purchased a 1941 Farmall A for some brush hogging. I have since purchased a McCormick grader/snow blade for it and am doing some maintainenance to the tractor before it gets too cold to do anything outside.

What I thought I bought was a Farmall A gasser. But as it turns out I think I have a distillate/gas unit.

The tractor came with no second gas tank for starting although the hood had an extra hole (4) for the tank. When I went to look into ordering a carburetor rebuild kit.

I noticed that a gas carb has a plug in place of the main jet nozzle adjustment screw for the distillate.

My tractor is running gas and has the distillate main jet adjustment screw. Can this be? Can it run like this and/or efficiently?

Which kit shold I buy? The gas or distillate??

Help?? Should I convert back to a gas carb or just buy another whole carb on Ebay?

I have enclosed pictures to help you visualize what I have on my tractor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

Thanks a ton guys.... This is my first Farmall and I would like to set it up so I can utilize it to it's potential. That obviously starts with knowing what you have.

Al the posts have been very helpful and I will surely get the manuals and parts on order.

I will also have more questions for this very helpful group in the coming weeks.

Thanks Again,
Tim

Thanks for the info. I will get the proper rebuild kit for the distillate carb and rebuild her. She leaks as evidence by the staining on the block. Is there anywhere where I can get individual parts for this carb?

Also Can you guys identify the cultivator set up that I have so I can get the proper literature to maintain and adjust it properly.
Thanks Again,
Tim

Looks like you have the pipe pangs, so it is an A-136. The silid gangs would be am A-138.

This manual at Binder Books should do:
MCD-5942 A-136, A-138, & A-437 McCormick Deering One-Row Pipe Gangs, One-Row, Solid Tool Bar Gangs, and Four-Row, Vegetable Cultivators for the Farmall A, 1945, 76 pgs. $21.95

The rebuild kits, depending on if you get a basic kit or a complete kit (check the descriptions for what each one includes), they come with most of the parts. Individual parts, may be able to check ebay or your local dealer, but most times everything comes in a rebuild kit.

The cultivators are the same ones I have on my 44 A, so when I get home I will look in my manuals and see what the model is, and I will find the site link that sells repros of the manuals.

Good luck with yours, they are a great little tractor.

Running this tractor on gas will not be a problem, those tractors used to start on gas and then you would switch over to distilatte after it warmed up. I used to have a John Deere B, which was originally a distillate/kerosene tractor, and I didnt experiance anything wrong by running it on gas. You can still get the kits for the carb you have, just get the number of the carb, should be on a tag on the top half. I would personally just rebuild the carb you have and go with it. Good Luck.
