Will a belt pulley gearbox off a M fit a SMTA? What is the difference in gear box with pulley mount with 4 holes and one with 8 holes?

All the gear boxes from the first M to the last 660 will fit. The shifting lever was changed from one side to the other starting with the SMTA (I think). That means the operating rod will be reversed from push to pull. I suppose it could be cut off and rewelded. I have a new unused gear box but can't remember if it is configured for SMTA. I can check if you are interested. Stay tuned because D Slater is sure to chime in if I forgot something.

the pulley shifting lever is on the left side on the '39 style m's and the later super m's with the hydraulic box like on the mta's also had the lever on the left side, the other m's had the lever pionting right. maybe i beat dave to the draw on this one, randy

Correct, the gearbox for the '39s did have the lever pointing to the left. I have a very nice one just taking up space out in the shop. I'm not sure, but I think the '39s also used lighter, narrower gears?

Only thing I mite add is the early lever with no operating rod carried over to early 40 model tractors. What I can remember on the 4 holes verses 8 is that early flanges that pulley bolted to were thiner with 4 holes and later thicker flanges were drilled with 8. Can't remember if all thick ones had 8 holes though. Later pulley drive housings have the left front corner as mounted on tractor angled back to give more room to remove starter on some tractors. Transmission top cover is angled back on corner also on later tractors.

hi dave, i know that things weren't changed until mid '40 thats why i said '39 style. all the pulley flanges that i have are like you described, thin cast four holes. thick flange eight holes.
