I HAVE A '71 154. I THOUGHT THAT I HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE BELT FROM THE PTO TO THE DECK SLIPPING. I SOON FIGURED OUT THAT IT WAS THE BELT FROM THE ENGINE TO THE PTO SHAFT. THAT CAN BE ADJUSTED BY REMOVING THE PLATE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE (CARB. SIDE). IF YOU WANT DETAILS BUY AN I.T. SHOP MANUAL FOR THE 154 AT TRACTOR SUPPLY CO OR YOUR IHC/CASE DEALER.

I had the same problem. There is not much that you can do to boost the engine other than maintain it in good order. The problem most likely is in you mower deck setting. Assuming that you have good sharp blades (a must), I will wager that the deck front to back angle is that the front is slightly higher than the back or that the deck at mowing height is level. The machine will labor with these settings as the blade is having to do more than double duty as it is always cutting the same blades of grass more than once. You will have to correct the deck and thus the blade angle by adjusting the deck to where the front or leading edge is lower than the back or trailing edge. I had to cut the angle iron that supports the deck on mine to correct this situation. I have mine set, at mowing height, to where the front is about a half bubble out of level using a carpenters level. It will amaze you as to how the mower and tractor will behave after this alteration.

Remember this is never going to be a real powerhouse. Maybe if you told us a little more about the terrain you mow, height of grass and such we could help more.

I have a '73 cub lo-boy 154. I had the engine rebuilt at an engine shop and it runs great now. I have a 6' IH mower underneath it and I have no problem mowing 5 acres with it.
