My 460 is knocking. It has a 301 gas in it with only 500 hrs from the overhaul. It does not smoke at all. The knock is loud, but it doesn't seem to be present unless the tractor is at an idle. What is causing this?

The best way to diagnose it is to use a stehoscope to pinpoint the noise so that you know which direction to head.

Could be "piston slap." Even with low hrs., specs. could be off, even on new sleeves & pistons.(too much clearance between sleeve wall and piston)Only way you could tell would be to mic. sleeve I.D. and piston diameter.

After some more thought, it could also possibly be a part affixed to the end of a shaft, such as a loose cam gear, or oil pump drive gear, crank pulley, etc.

Many times if a keyed pulley or gear gets loose and develops play it can be heard at lower speeds as it oscillates back and forth, at higher rpms and under load, the looseness is masked as the oscillation is overcome by larger loads "in the same direction" that takes up the play.

Guessing at idle there is less oil pressure than at "working rpms".

The knock is likely the result of clearance in part of the mechanism where there shouldn't be any, examples could be in the valvetrain (lifter, pushrod, rocker arm) or the bottom end of the engine such as connecting rods or wrist pins.

I think I'd have the "covers" off (valve cover, side/lifter cover, oil pan) as a fairly easy to check things out...of course you can't run it like that, but possibly you can locate a loose pushrod with the valves at rest or play in a conrod bearing with gentle application of a prybar.

Leaving it alone could reveal the problem in a dramatic and expensive manner!
