Have a kindly retired 70 year old gentleman with a case of the shakes asked me if I could get his old 464 running for him. Though it has set for couple years outdoors nose to the north I was able to get it going and it behaves actually rather nicely for the horrible stinkin gas there is still in there! A new five gallon can got it to only smell bad, up from what is that stuff?Anyway, I wanted to time it for him. It sounds to be laboring and knocks rather stoutly (partly the condition of the gas) but I want to make it right. I admit it was getting into the dim hours of the afternoon here in Ohio and for lack of cold there's a lot of mud out there so I didn't roll 'round under it but I did not see any obvious peep holes in the flywheel housing nor did I see any obvious pointers at the front end. I asked him if he had the manual for it & he said yes I do but it was back at the house in the next county north. Now that I have the manual, it says to check timing with a timing light and set timing to 20° at high idle. If one is not available, see your IH dealer! Trouble is, it does not tell where the timing marks are! I figured if anybody can help me it's you guys. If I get it to start and run well for him, he'll park it inside and start using it again! His kids seem interested only in liquidating his estate. If it was mine I'd just buy a shop manual. Thanks for the assistance!
