1941 Farmall A Question

Howdy, I just came into a 1941 Farmall A. It runs fine, but I"m going through it to clean things up. There is a fill cap in front of the mount for the distributor. I have no idea what this would be. Also, the original temp. gauge is in good shape, but the connecting wire is broken about a foot away from the gauge. Can I repair this wire some how, or remove it from the gauge, and replace it with the wire comung from the sending unit? I would GREATLY appreciate any help You could give me. Happy New Year, Grizz

I Have a 1952 Super AV in original condition. There is no heat gauge on it at all.

I am in the process of rebuilding a 1941 A. The temp guage sits in front of the distributer and there is no fill in that area. If the wire to the guage is broken get a whole new one from this site. WQhat is your serial number founf on plate on left side of tractor under the seat. That will tell you what you have for sure.

As stated below, you have an H or M, or some other tractor in that series. If the gauge has a wire, it is an aftermarket gauge that is somehow wired into the electrical system. As noted, about any temperature gauge thru at least the 60 series is mechanical and not repairable -- I have a 460 with a mechanical gauge. There are "inexpensive" replacement gauges readily available from several sources.

If it is a '41 A it was a mechanical temp gauge, not electric and the "wire" is a thin tube from an expansion bulb. If it is broken or crushed it must be professionally rebuilt or replaced as a unit. They are filled with a liquid that expands when heated and the gauge is actually a pressure gauge that reacts to the expanding liquid. Today they use a blend of freons to calibrate the scale and are not adjustable in the field.

Are you shure you have an A there cause I have a 45 A and there is no fill cap in front of the Mag/Dis. the engine oil is added in the top cap (above the hood). Do you have some type of Hydro systme on it?

are you shure its a farmall a? sounds more like an h or an m. i dont think the a had a temp gauge, and the c-113 motor had the oil fill thru the hood into the valve cover. the temp gause should be mechanical, if the cable is broken , you need to replace the whole gause assembly. go to galleries on the left, click on tractor photos and search for farmall a , see if its your tractor.
