I'm totally restoring an H and am now on the engine, block was cut .oo8 and head was cut .oo6. First question is, will my piston hit head or valves[I'm using fire crater pistons] and 2nd question is how much protrusion do I need on my liners, I have been told none and also told .001 to .003, currently I have approximately .008 protrusion. Please help!

Thanks fellas, I appreciate the input, I used a flat file and a dial gauge indicator and cut the liners so that I have a .001 to .003 protrusion, with ya"lls help and my filing I think I will be safe.

To check valve to piston clearance: Put a bead of modeling clay on top of the piston. Don't cover the whole piston just a bead where the valve reliefs are. Put the head on and assemble the valvetrain as you normally would. Turn the engine a few revolutions (by hand). Pull the head off and measure the thickness of the clay.

My manual says they can be flush with the top of the block or the maximum they can protrude is .006" above the block. After you install the
pistons, head and rocker arms I would rotate the engine several revolutions to make sure the valves and pistons are not touching one another.

The protrusion amount is not going to hit anything but the gasket, (usually about .040" thick when installed) The gasket may protrude into the chamber, if so it could hit it if you have the old gasket, or the new and can predict its crush inward, go for a check of the clearance. Using a Super H gasket might solve any clearance issues. Good luck, JimN

The maximum protrusion 0.006 on the sleeve heights. Since the top deck of your block has been machined the counterbores also need to be cut.Do the sleeve heights vary from cylinder to cylinder? These things sould be taken in to account,so you have agood even crush on your head gasket.

Nothing should hit. The sleeves should be flush on the H but the book says you can have up to .006 protrusion. Under no cicumstances should the sleeve be below the deck. If I were you I'd shave .006 off of the tops of the sleeves. That will give you a little room for error.

A simple trick I used to use on smallblock V8s was to remove the valve keepers & springs on # 1 cyl., and put tape around the valve stem to keep it from falling in. Then put #1 piston at TDC, and set the head on the block w/o the gasket. Then measure the valve stem travel until it hits.
Add half the thickness of a new headgasket. You need to know the valve lift from a repair manual.
