Well, I bought a cub today. Probably paid too much, but it;s cute, and has good tin and original paint. But it needs lots of work. So here are my questions:

Can I replace the rear main bearing seal without removing the crankshaft?

It has a very bad noise in low and reverse, and some noise in second, and quiet in high and neutral. I suspect some bearings are gone, and maybe the cluster gear. How do I get at all that?

Is the steering box adjustable, or do I learn to live with sloppy steering?

I am missing one front light. Where can I get one, with bracket?

You will have to split the Cub and remove the clutch to replace the rear main seal. I have two cubs they both make noise in reverse. The other noise I'm not sure about that. I would take to top cover off and the pull rear cover for the PTO off and inspect all the internal parts. The teeth on my steering gear were worn so I put a shim in to tighten every thing up. That help the most on my steering probem.

You don't have to pull the crank to replace the rear main oil seal but you do have to split the tractor. The rear main is a lip seal, and is a round circle and it sets in a retainer, that is bolted on the back of the engine block. You must remove the engine, clutch, and flywheel then remove the bearing retainer. As for the gear box, you already have the engine out its time for some exploritory sergery. Just a guess but the front cluster bearing sounds like a suspect to to me. Don't make much difference though has to be looked at. Steering,,not a expert still working on my first Cub restoration but I don't see too much for adjusting in the shop manual. There is some shims at the tie rod end of the steering arm but won't help if the slop is in the gear.

Thanks. I guess if I have the tractor split, I may as well rebuild the engine. It has some blowby, and smokes a bit, so it's probably due.

I found the shims and removed 3 and the slop is acceptable. The looseness in the box is not so bad, with the linkage tightened up, and one steering arm tightened to the wheel shaft.

What is in the background? A 12 or 14. An H or M?

Hey! you got so excited about the background, you forgot to tell me how to fix the rear main seal and noisy transmission.

In the yard is a 38 F12, a 37 F20, and a 41H. Look on my web site to see more.

My suggestion is to buy the shop and parts
manuals to help you along. You can buy them
from Case Int. for about 60.00 for the pair. Good luck,
Gary
