My MV is rarely started and sometimes needs to have the battery charged. Since the battery cover is difficult to remove should I be able to charge the battery by connecting the charger to the ground bolt on the tractor and to the starter nut without disconnecting them? Seems like it would be the same as connecting to the battery posts ;however, I tried to jump the battery by connecting my jump cables across these same points and it would not jump start? Its a 12 volt system with a Mag. Thanks

The polarity must match + to + - to -, Bob is correct, I'll add the possible starter motor stuck (do the lights dim way down when trying), or open, or switch (Starter) failure. JimN

Connecting the charger or booster cables to those locations remote from the battery works just as well as connecting directly to the battery.

And, it's a HECK of a lot safer! If you've ever witnessed a battery explosion, you'll know what I mean!

If doing it that way didn't work for you, you had a poor connection, either at the booster cable locations, or netween the battery cables and the battery posts.

Bob or others, Can I safely start my 6 volt "H" by connnecting to the starter and engine block? Don't like sliding out the battery box and exploding batteries. H has negative ground (original way) so do I put pos clamp on starter and neg on engine block?

Yes, 12 volt either polarity, makes no difference. Neutral, brakes, fuel, choke, kill sw on, and jump t the starter terminal direct. Thia leaves the entire system (except starter motor) free of the 12v. JimN

Let's think about this for a minute. The tractor is 12 volts, so probably a negative ground. Using jumper cables, with negative connected to the starter mounting bolt, and positive connected to the stud on the starter, the starter should immediately begin spinning because you have by-passed the starter button. Connecting a battery charger in the same fashion, and at the same points, would NOT charge the battery, because again, the full circuit has not been made until the starter button is depressed. Make sense?

Your right of course-the starter switch would have to be engaged for the circuit to be complete for charging.

The tractor starts right up with a decent charge on the battery . When I have tried to jump it by installing the cables around the starter nothing happens. I agree that it seems like that would spin the starter but it doesn't. Strange?

With eather polarity jumpers to the chassis, and to the terminal of the starter motor will spin the engine. If it does not, thse acbles, or battery, or connections are bad. There is no other possibility, Starter motore are series wound (mostly) and run only one way. If connected (proper polarity this time)to the battery side of the big starting switch, you can then start it with the big pushbutton. If it does not the Jump battery, or cables are toast. The jumper cables need to be #2 stranded copper or better. Number 10 wire with a fat plastic insulator is just disguised lamp cord and will not do any starting task (ever) They can be used to charge a low battery from a running vehicle, but not start it. Rusty,

I was thinking he was referring to the battery cable terminal on a starter-mounted manual starter switch. Is this not the case?

I don't think the starter mounted switch was used until the Supers came out?

I just repair the darned things, and am NOT a restoration "purist", so I can't argue the starter switch setup.

My point was... connecting to the appropriate connections AWAY from the battery is a GOOD idea.

Bob, my comments were not directed to you, I was merely trying to continue the thought process, and I do agree 100% with making the connections away from the battery. That method is ALWAYS better and safer.
