154 Lo-Boy parts sources and battery size/type

I just trailered home a 1974 Cub Lo-Boy 154, my first tractor bigger than my JD 180. It needs some work but I know it ran last year and mice in the dash wiring is the current problem (no pun intended). I have a replacement harness but I am going through everything as I would with a car I dragged home out of a barn. I need to find a correct replacement air filter insert (wrong one installed), the correct battery that will clear the (missing) battery cover, a throttle cable, etc etc. A good manual too. I did a Google search for the air filter and came up empty. Someone was kind enough to steer me to Carter and Grunewald for the harness, but I do not see air filters etc on there. Can someone please share where they get the maintenance items for these tractors?

NAPA is a good source for things like filters. I got my manual from the IHC dealer. Steering wheel should come off with a gear puller after the nut is off, but sometimes they are a little stubborn. Good luck with your tractor. They are pretty good little mowing tractors. There is a dedicated Yahoo group site for the numbered cubloboys. I seem to be challenged posting the link. Thanks guys. I just got back from visiting a great guy near me who has a few 154's and parts them out for eBay. I learned a lot. I must have somewhat of a special edition, i have a Buddy L (yes, the toy maker) embossed on my dash plate and it does say Cub Lo-Boy on it so I think it goes with the tractor. My air filter housing was non OEM so I got one of those with the correct metal tube and all (and a filter with a NAPA number!). Also got a battery and I'm ready to tackle the steering wheel, should have known it would be splined but there is no nut or horn so it appears the threads go right down into the wheel. Here's a few photos:

Looks like you might have to cut and paste the links. I bought it from a very good friend who used it to cut pastures at his horse farm, it came with the farm. It was cheap enough that he can probably claim me as a dependent on his taxes next year. I know it ran last year, so it will run again. Out of 90+ cars I've dragged home in various states of disrepair not one has left me not running so I'm sure with you guys helping I can get this one back together and going too. There's just a lot of MacGyvering on it that I have to undo and since I've never seen one before, it's hard to tell for sure what's OEM and what's not since it's all the right shade of yellow.

I'm kinda hooked on these things. It seems possible they could be a lot of fun. All i want is something to pull my cars around, plow the driveway, and haul wood up the hill to build my barn. I didn't want a 4 wheeler or a 8/9N. Glad I got the 154.

It's not a factory Buddy L until someone sticks a matching metal Buddy L sticker on the dash plate. It took me a fingernail and a half to get it started once I saw on the back side it wasn;t embossed into the plate but it came off. Steering wheel came off pretty easy and I'm into the dash wiring. A lot of corrosion and decayed wiring to fix and one of those Ford style "I fail so much I'm blister packed at WalMart" starter solenoids. There's hope.

I know it seems unlikely but it has Cub Lo-Boy on it and all of the bolt holes and other accessory holes line up with OEM. I'll know more when I take the shroud apart and see whether there are holes under the plate that aren't used. The shroud has the 154 on it in the correct color and font so I know the shroud is right. I'm out to pull the steering wheel, more later.

Just call C & G and speak to Ken. He can fix you up with everything. The battery on mine is a 22NF or something like that.Took me forever to find something that would fit into the hole and clear the cover. Its not the right one as the one that was in it was shorter, but this one works.

Thanks John. I didn't see anything like that on their web site else I would have asked them. I just noticed that the air filter housing cover I have is incorrect, it's actually a paint can lid so I'm sourcing the correct cover so the correct air filter will work. The installed air filter is totally wrong, it's blocking the intake air hole on the bottom of the housing.

Thanks Bill. As noted above, I don't have the correct air filter cover yet but I'll look to see if there is a CarQuest around here. I'd like to get a service manual myself, can you recommend a place to get one? I have a lot of things to undo (screwdriver wedged into linkage under the generator appears to have replaced a throttle cable). One thing I need to know is how the steering wheel comes off. I need to get the fiberglas "dashboard" off and get to the dash wiring. I assumed that it was threaded on the shaft and wedging the lower linkage arm and using light hits from a dead blow on the wheel after PB Blaster should break it loose. Is this correct?

the wheel is on a splin. take of nut and use a bearing separater+ gear puller.
