'52 Farmall M Float Adjustment

I am having difficulty with adjustment of the float on a "52 M with a Zenith carburator. The design makes it difficult because the float shaft is in the upper half and the float bowl is in the bottom half. Are there any tricks to bending the float so that it fits in the tight-fitting float bowl (so it does not bind as it rises and falls)? I"ve been using the trial-and-error method, hooking the two halves together, running the engine and testing the results to no avail. With a new float valve and seat it is still leaking gas out of the carburator near the choke valve. It has to be that the float is sticking on the side of the bowl. I"m probably going to ruin the gasket by separating the two halves so much.

I may just end up getting a new float as well.

While your at it check it for pin holes or dents, which effects its proper operation. I ususally do a float test and it tells all. I had one that was off balance so to speak, and it would hang itself up and bind, thus flooding or starving engine (depending where it stuck). Make sure the float is clean where its hinged too. They often rust there and that will make a flaot stick too.

Takes some tinkering and is better if carb is off tractor. If it is you can turn carb over and back and hear if float moves free. I usualy just put a bolt in each corner just snug enough to hold in place while checking float clearance. When I think its good put all bolts in and check again. If top of carb is mounted on tractor, after installing bottom I take drain plug or drain valve out of it and use a plastic tube like comes on spray cans,run it up through hole until you feel it hit underside of float in center below needle valve. Gently push float up and let it back a few times. If its rubbing you can feel or hear it. Not hard to hit the right spot with a little practice. I do that as final check even if was okay before installing.

Never seen a Zenith on a M. I thought they all came with an IH carb on them. Did Zenith make a replacement for them?

I thought for sure that an older parts man at an IH dealer told me it was a Zenith but looking at a few parts websites I find that it is most likely an IH-E-12 carburator.

Thanks for the photo. That is a clever idea for seeing the fuel level "inside" the carburetor.

My problem is knowing if the float will be rubbing inside the carburator once the two halves are connected. My shop manual shows the spec for the distance from the top half to the bottom of the float.

allen when you have the float in place gently lift the bowl up and watch for movement from the float, try and lift the bowl straight up to where it mounts, if the float is moving, its probably rubbing on the bowl. you can eyeball it with the bowl off, set the float into the lower bowl and kind of line it up that way first. other thing to check is the shaft that holds the float. it should fit snug in the posts. one side has a slot, you may need to squeeze it closed just a hair so the shaft doesnt slip out. i had an h that did that, dang carb drove me crazy with the dripping till i found the shaft would slide out on occasion

here is a photo from an old tractor manual on setting a float level. hook some clear fuel line up to the carb drain bowl and then you can hld it up to show the fuel level. bend the float gently, sometimes the float is rubbing on the bowl, so bend it gently so it doesnt catch
