I inherited my IH 444 from my Dad a couple of years ago. It runs pretty good but had never been maintained as good as it should have been. It was used when my Dad got it and he had it for 30 or 40 years. The exhaust manifold extension goes up from the manifold and then makes a U turn down and then joins a 1 1/2 inch exhaust pipe that twists down, around, then back toward the rear of the tractor. The pipe is loose where it joins the manifold U extenstion so it leaks there plus the pipe has been bent, mashed, and otherwise abused over the past 50 or so years. I see no sign of it ever having a muffler. If it was, it had to be under the rear axle. The photo on the manual cover shows a 444 with the exhaust going straight up from the manifold with a standard muffler. There is no hole in my cowl for such an installation. Should I buy a standard muffler and run it straight down as I think there is adequate room? Or should I buy a standard muffler and cut a hole in the cowling and try to break loose those bolts that hold the U bend on? I sure don"t want to twist those bolts off and have to drill, etc. I"m thinking straight down with no bends. Any reason why the exhaust should not blow down on the ground? Thanks

My 2444 came with underslung exhaust. I put a new muffler on it but after breaking it off three times I switched it to verticle exhaust. My manifold was already threaded for the verticle pipe so I just cleaned up the threads with a tap, installed a new pipe, and used a hole saw to make a hole in the hood.

It had an underslung muffler. I spent many hours on a 444 with underslung muffler. Never noticed the heat. Biggest problem with those is that if you are adjusting a rear mounted implement with your nose close to the exhaust it doesn't smell very good. I will agree with Hugh that you have to be careful not to start a fire. Also, I hate to cut holes in sheet metal. I would put it back as it came from the factory.

Bill: Unless you have an operational reason like working under low buildings or orchards, etc., I'd cut the hole and buy a vertical exhaust and mufler. Vertical exhausts take noise, fumes and heat away from the operator, very important. Vertical exhaust systems have a much longer lifespan, and are less money to buy.

Just about every owner of the under slung exhaust had a hot left foot from exhaust going under that floor board. Fumes come up behind these, and can be bad under some circunstances. My dad set a hay field on fire with a under exhaust. He was breaking into windrows, baling, and was used to vertical exhaust. Some hay from the windrow the tractor was straddling caught something on tractor, thus he was draging the same hay at the end of exhaust. It was a dry day, hay was a bit overdry and bingo we had a fire. Lost better part of an acre of hay. Just yesterday, not far from here someone lost the whole field of hay in windrow by fire. Don't know the cause, all the media were told, "it was a spark."
