Voltage regulator question on H

I always though the regulator would slow down the charge rate if the battery was fully charged. My H seems to keep charging at 13-14 amps at full throttle and the battery is starting to get wet around the caps. Is the "new" regulator not working right? The battery is 3 years old.

If the battery is good the charge rate should taper off to 3 - 5 amps or so as the battery approaches full charge. However as noted below, if the battery has about reached the end of it's life it may indeed charge hard and sweat around the caps even though it is fully charged.

Try taking a voltage reading voltmeter across the battery terminals after the engine's run at speed for several minutes. If it shows greater than about 7.4 volts the battery is being overcharged. I'd then be looking for a bad voltage regulator. If the voltage is lower expect the battery to give out before long.

Note: If you use a voltmeter use an analog VOM or a GOOD, industrial-grade DVM (like a Fluke...). Reason: Many cheaper DVM's give false readings on old tractor electrical on account of all the transients and "noise" flying around in these systems!

Check the charging voltage at the battery. About 7.4 Volts is "max".

Also, a battery that is going "bad" will continuously draw a charge, and piddle out the vent caps.

It is supposed to do that. A telling factor is voltage with it running at 3/4 throttle, and charging as described, put a volt meter across the battery. If it reads 14.2 to 14.6 volts, it is probably great. If it is in the 14.7 and above range, the regulator voltage is set high. This can be adjusted, but if under warrantee, I would take it back. The amp meter should go back to +4 or5 amps when an hour of operation has passed JimN

It is 6 volts, but I should have mentioned that. I suppose the volts should be about 7.5 or 8. It was one of those regs made in India supplied by the genny shop when they fixed the genny. I am getting so tired of that junk they keep selling us. Also I have replaced the genny that was on my 51 H with one from a super H that has a third brush , but is not moveable. I was going to try to slow down the charge rate that way. My H does not have the L H charge settings on the light switch.

SuperHs never had 3 brush, soit was not originalwith that sourcetractor. The regulation of a three brush unit is ont as controlled as that of a twobrush. All regulators were intended for two brush gens. Three brush gens can be modified, but you need a diagram and the willingness to dive in. THe archives likely have some more info, JimN
