Knocking sleeves in

I've been looking in the archives to find out the
proper way to put a sleeve in. Lots of info. on how to get em out. I've got the critter out and am
wanting to put a new one in. Should a guy run a hone down the cyl. a little or just dress it up with emery cloth. Is this a heat the block
and put the sleeve in the freezer type of deal? What about lube and what do you knock the sleeve
in with? (oak block)? I know you need things good
and clean. This eng. is in the frame. This is a
early M. Thanks for any help.

Take your new sleeves and pur them in the freezer. The sleeves will shrink a little, and the sleeve will slide in easer.

I life to clean the block and be able to slide the sleeve down about three or four inches. If you can't then hone the block a little. If you can get it down the three or four inches then you should be able to tap it the rest of the way with a hammer and plate. I like to check the piston clerance on each cylinder with a feeler gauge. A .003 feeler gauge should go between the piston and sleeve.

Bill, all I did was shine up the cylinder walls with steel wool and coated it and the outer sleeve walls with WD 40. I kept the sleeves in the freezer for 2 days. They pushed down about 2/3 of the way then I used a block of oak and lightly tapped them all the way in. I had no problems whatsoever.

bill (per)the IH blue ribon shop book super clean the bore in the block and the out side of sleve then coat out side of sleve with green lock tite,sparingly. wen you fit them they should drop in arond 4 inches then get tite press in the rest of the way.most pepole dont have a press so i use the cookie that i used to pull it with,that way the driving force will distributed at all 360 degrese.you will hear wen it is seated by the diffrent sound wen you strike it,if you cant get the sleve started at the top hone the cylinder some but be careful no to go to far if they fit only hand tite all the way down, you stand the chance of them coming out and wen they do they go strait to the oil pan in a milloin pices.clean the groves at the top real good to make sure they fit all the way. good luck i was worried on my first set and now i have done hundreds of them and only had one go to the oil pan,and it was on a 8-n ford.
