While in the process of restoring my '52 Cub I decided to look inside the transmission just to do a visual and guess what? I find 1 ball bearing laying on top of an oil trough to collect splash off of the gears and direct oil to the front and rear clutch shaft bearings. It appears to be the same size as the shift shaft "poppet" or detent bearings. I also removed the 1 & reverse shaft for the shift fork and as I drove out the shaft right behind th expansion plug was another of the same size bearings???? Anyone ever see anything like this? I had better keep looking for other problems.

I pulled it down and couldn't find anything wrong with the bearings. Its mystery to me how they got in there especially the one between the shift shaft and the expansion plug. I did however find a crack in the reverse and first gear shifter fork. Cost over $65 bucks for a new fork. I guess it is a good thing I pulled it down thanks for the replies

Bob,

I completley overhauled my transmission on my '50 Cub, actually removing all the guts a couple of times trying to solve a clicking sound. There should only be the two "poppet" balls in there of that size. Perhaps someone pulled it apart without being careful to keep track of them and they fell in the case. There is one ball bearing type bearing for one of the shafts but if it were missing two balls out of its cage you would certailnly hear it.

Good luck, when I took the PTO off my B, I noticed a little wedge shaped piece of metal. Turned out there was a whole mess of 'em. It was the teeth off the oiler gear, every dang one of 'em was sheared off. Should have been 39 of them, I only found about 20.
