You first gotta understand the difference in a 2 wire Cutout Relay (most used the older 3 brush adjustable genny) versus a 3 or 4 terminal full fledged Voltage Regulator and go one way or the other. If you use a 2 wire Cutout Relay (BAT and GEN/ARM terminals) the gennys Field post wires up to a correct LHBD light switch where it gets either a dead ground for High Charge or a resistive ground (on back of switch) for Low Charge. The Cutout relay wires: BAT terminal to Load (NOT battery/Starter) side of ammeter. GEN/ARM terminal to ARM post on genny. Gennys Field post wires up to a correct LHBD light switch. A 4 terminal (LOAD BAT FLD ARM) VR wires: BAT to load side of ammeter FLD to gennys Fld post ARM to gennys ARM post LOAD feeds hot battery voltage up to loads like lights or ignition (if a coil ignition) often via a connection to their switches BAT input terminal A 3 terminal (BAT ARM FLD) VR wires: BAT to load side of ammeter FLD to gennys Fld post ARM to gennys ARM post and loads get their voltage off the load side of the ammeter (same post that wires to BAT down on the VR) Make sure the belt is good n tight and POLARIZE the Genny BEFORE you fire her up n see what happens????? ????? ????? Which (VR or Cutout Relay) do you have now??? What light switch do you have now??? EITHER a Cutout Relay (provided the right LHBD switch) or a VR will work and if you have a true magneto (NOT one modified as a coil ignition) it has nuttin to do with the charging system and the Mag dont get wired to none of the charging stuff, perhaps a ground out kill switch somewhere. Nowwwww ww once you get it wired up correctly with a Cutout Relay orrrrr a Voltage Regulator and its polarized but still dont charge, if you still need my Complete Troubleshooting Procedure for non charging and how to tell if its a genny or a VR/Relay problem, post back n let me know John T
