Hi guys: I just bought a 1950-51 Farmal M ( Dads got's to be laughing in the ground couldn't wait to get away from this farm, now all I want to do is make hay !!) I got the beast home, fired it up and she ran fine. but if I pull the throatle leaver up fast she would cut out let of and she'd save. I figured it was the carb, so I rebuilt.and installed fired it up agin and engine just ran at the same range.did all adjustments in service manual, and replaced the spring in the Govenor. Also checked gov tub to butteryfly connection and all fine.Help please!! could it be the gear in govonor? or the magneto ? I would appreciate any ideas .

Well to eliminate the governor as the culprit, unbolt the carb from the manifold but keep the governor tube hooked up. Then move the throttle lever in different positions and make sure the butterfly in the carburetor is moving also. If the butterfly IS NOT moving, make sure you got the tongue of the govenor throttle shaft into the groove in the carburetor. If that is OK, then look at the ball bearing thruster assembly behind the governor spring. It should slide horizontally but not wiggle. If it wiggles, it is worn.

Red; Thank you so much for the info,I noticed on the Throtle shaft leaver ,where it goes into the buterfly shaft that it looks like there is suppose to be a Half round cover that might keep the shaft in the y yoke of the B shaft. It isn't there. I am going out to try you'r info. have learned alot from you by shearching the archives We all owe you a vote of THANKS !!!

That might be your culprit. It has been 9 years since I rebuilt an M carburetor, but I don't think it was different than the H other than a tad larger.

Bob you might also want to pull the top angled cover off the governor housing and make sure the shaft didn't get disconnected. That tiny cotter pin might have fallen out.
