My Dad has a Farmall 460 that he just rebuilt. The hydraulics are very slow and sluggish. He understands that is typical for these tractors. He has heard that by changing gearing on the hydraulic pump it will improve the hydraulic performance. Is anyone familar with this or any other method to improve the hydraulic performance of the farmall 460.

To get the hydraulics to work at a decent pace the tractor throttle has to be very high and then they work ok. We have heard they may have a gearing change for the pump to get the better response.

Been through all this with a 460 if the pump is making some noise it is probably the pick-up tube that goes between the filer and the pump...read old oak farmalls article like was stated earlier in this post...probably a couple O Rings and You will need that pick up tube and the seal about 45 dollars if i remember correctly and you will be in great shape. After you do that you will have my problem that your chasing leaks as it has more pressure than its had for years !!!

Good Luck

I have a 460 and my hydrualics are not slow or sluggish. They are real powerful. Did you check your hydrualic filter yet? Or Hytran fluid level? Or maybe your pump is bad. I think 460s take the same pump as some of the newer larger tractors.

There's no gearing to change to speed the pump up. I would suspect a bad pump or possiablly a control valve problem. As the Tractor Vet would say you need to find someone with a flowrater to test the system to see were you are before you start replacing parts.

That's what I was just sittin' here thinking.

"Slow and sluggish" is not normal.
