After seeing some pictures of 400's here I've noticed that they are all red, but the one I have is painted cream on the side hoods' backgrounding Farmall and the grill is also painted cream,my dad bought this machine from the original owner in 1955 when it was 2 years old it came with a 1 row Marbeet beet digger on it and stayed that way intill about 1967 when we quit farming sugar beets,it had never been painted until I did it in 1974 and no traces of red were found under the white, now was this a special paint job or a demonstrater model, am hoping some one could clear this up for me. Serial num. is 29522 S Thankyou

The 300 utility's of that time had the same color scheme. Totally red except for the grill and the panels under the side labels. They were a shade of white. The 300 utility that I have is painted like that.

The 300 Utility was also all red. The 350 Utility had the white grill and side panels. All of the 300, 400, 600, etc related series were all red wether they were International or Farmall. All of the 350, 450, 650, and related series tractors were red with white grill and side panels.

If you look in the book 150 Years of International Harvester on page 356 you will see a 300 Utility with a white grill and white on the side panel. Just like mine. Why or for what reason I don't know but International did produce some with the white. I am the second owner of this 300 Utility and I knew the original owner. It had never been repainted.

Kelvin,

Your 300 Utility may have had a special order paint sceme, as IHC would paint any color you ordered. However, the standard factory paint on the 300 Utility was all red.

I have a 400 Diesel that has the white grill & hood sides and before we repainted it you could clearly see that it was originaly white (besides I agree that the white looks beter) and I have seen vintage pictures of a 400 with the white grill, I think it was in an dictinaory or something.

The serial number shows it is a 1956. The only thing I can think of it was painted later to look like the newer models. If it was sandblastd you would not find any of the original red. The correct color is all red.

I once owned a '56 400, and in trying to answer the same question, I found that all hundred series were all red. Also, the white under the 'Farmall' on the sides of the X50's was a decal, not paint. Therefore, I agree with the others who say your 400 should be all red, even though the white accents look MUCH better!
