I have been running the old girl for about an hour now filled the hydraulic reservoir up to the bottom of the fill hole opened what I think is the bleed valve (hex key bolt above and slightly forward of the distributor, it looks to have hydro fluid in it) I have been cranking (armstronging) the wheels back and forth and pushing and pulling hydro levers and I have not even had a hiccup yet out of it. What am I doing wrong? I know in the thick german accent of the previous owner I was told (warned) about how hard it is to get it primed again. But an hour seems a bit excessive, it doesn't even seem like it is trying. below my steering wheel there is a lever that I disconnected when I pulled the instrument cluster to repaint it but I put it back on, I am assuming that this lever turns the hydraulic pump off and on? I have a Du Al Bucket and Grapple on it so my hydraulic levers are all aftermarket mounted to the rear passenger side fender. Is there a way to expedite this process? Or should I be doing something differently? I cannot handle a 10 month process of getting the hydraulics to work, they did work when I parked the tractor 10 months ago, but there was a leak on the power steering lines, would it help if I used a jackall to lift the bucket and then I let it back down would that give me enough pressure to get the fluid moving?. Any ideas are always appreciated. I also have to mention that I think the only person more excited than me was my 3 year old boy, he has wanted to go for a ride on that thing everyday for the past 10 months, and now he wil finally be able to. :)

Brain

The most commom problem with posting pics on this site is that they must be "hosted" somewhere, you can't just upload them from your computer.

I am guessing you should have no problem uploading pics to a server you have or using some of the free photo hosting services.

Be sure pics are 640 x 480 or less, & 72 dpi for the best result for everyone.

When you post a pic, there is a place to put the url address for you image on the form.

Good luck

Randy

Update: Hydraulic Help Please in reply to Brian Jensen, 10-04-2007 12:26:37
Just to update, still no hydraulics, would love to know what the lever is under my steering wheel that goes into the hydraulic system. Not sure if it is an on/off thing or if it is for the original hydraulic system? But I know it is really hard to move not sure which position it should be in either.

I would make a fitting (rubber plug) with a schrader (tire valve stem) valve in it to fit the fill plug. I would remove the bleeder from the pump (put a pan under it) and put about 15 psi in the resivoir (watch the bleeder to see if things are moving. It might not need to be running. That is what I would do, others may have more help. JimN

Jim, that sounds like a good idea. I've had to do the same thing on a few skidloaders. Brian might not even have to go through the trouble of making a special cap for the reservior, mabey he can just stick a blow gun in there and hold a rag around the blow gun. I would do this with the engine off and the bleed screw loose like you say, if that didn't work I'd take the pump inlet line loose and pressurize the reservior until fluid starts flowing. Once fluid gets to the pump, the pump should pick up and go. On my little Farmall 240, which has similar hydraulics to a 400/450, the bleed screw is stuck. One time it lost prime after I did some work on the pump, so I cracked the pump outlet line loose with the engine running. Made a small mess but it worked.

Took mine more than a month before it primed. I would start it and try cycling the FH everyday. Had already decided the pump was toast. Then one day I started it and heard a little whine from the pump. I reached up and turned the steering wheel and wah lah, I had very good power steering. Has worked fine ever since. Just keep driving it and playing with levers. It will prime sooner or later.

I would love to dirve it and keep playing with the levers but unless I want to cultivate my yard I cant because the teeth of the grapple are dug into my grass about 6 inches, I already clutivated my way out of the barn, I figured maybe I could plant corn in the tracks I laid. :)

Just starting and letting it run may work. I tried pressurizing mine and nothing helped. It did start working one day though.

What is "the old girl?" I'm guessing an H or an M.

Live hydraulics or belly pump?
If you don't have hoses or pipes running to the housing in front of the distributor, that is not a hydraulic pump. All that is, is a spacer. It has engine oil in it, which looks a lot like hydraulic fluid because basically they're the same thing.

If it's got a belly pump, you need to pull the lever on the right side of the tractor, and lock it back to get pressure. Your foot can't be on the clutch pedal either.

It is a 450D I have hoses running to the distributor. The lever is the one I was referencing? it is kind of bent looking? and comes into the top of the pump?

Take a look at the hydraulic hoses on the picture
of the SuperW6TA under Pat-CT just above your posting. I posted 3 pictures there, but look at the bottom picture. Hal
It looks like there's a pump there.

Hey Hal,

Thanks for the pic, I have put some pics of my beast on my website you can check them out at Link there are some hydralic pics in there please let me know what you think the system is. My FIL said that the valves are stuck in the pump? Does that sound accurate.

That looks like a plumbers nightmare. Can you get any help from the former owner? Hal

Oh yeah, Hal, what a mess, the previous owner as you can tell by his maintenance skills is useless as T!ts on a bull. He was a hack no matter how you look at it. Anyways I have a new design for the hydraulic system but it is money permitting, hydro parts are not cheap around here. So I get to work with what I have. I had the lift, curl and grapple working today a couple of times but it keeps getting airlocked and bleeding is not an easy job to do by yourself. I was trying to convince my FIL to come by and help as he works with Heavy Machinery and is an Ex-Farmer but he couldn't so I had my wife trying to help me until the system blew fluid all over me, my truck, the tractor, my wife and everything within a 20 foot radius of it. Will get back at it tomorrow, eventually I will get all the air out. But welcome to my nightmare, thank god I can see through grease and dents like it is glass, I know what this tractor CAN and WILL be, just need more time, more money and more patience. So in answer to your question, no the former owner is retired, moved into a Winnebago and is down in FLA or something. So you guys are definately stuck with me for a while. :)

You wouldn't think it would be such an issue as I am a web designer Burnt Timber Multimedia, just most sites give you instructions how to do it. But I am attributing most of my stupidity to the diesel fumes these days.
