Hi, My 1943 Farmall H runs good, except when you speed up the engine, it kind of sounds like it is going to shut off, it kind of spudders then it runs fine after that when its speeded up. Why does it do this? It has never done this before. The tractor usually only starts with the throttle all the way down, if it is in the middle or speeded up, it won't start, it will smell gas and not start, think it might be flooding or something. It starts and runs fine when the throttle is all the way down, but it also does not run as slow as it should when the throttle is all the way down, when it is all the way down, it runs like it is in the middle. The carburetor throttle shaft is engaged with the governor shaft tooth. I hope you can understand this!

Thanks!
Andy.

With the engine warm & running at wide open throttle (WOT), turn high speed mixture screw (on the bottom facing down to the rear) in until the engine begins to starve for fuel. Then turn the screw out until the engine begins to blubber. Now find the "sweet spot" in between the two settings. If you are working the engine (plowing, etc.), then the high speed screw needs to be turned out 1 turn or more beyond the "sweet spot" to be sure the engine isn't starving for fuel and can develop its rated power.

The same procedure can be followed for idle mixture with the addition of the idle stop screw (just to the rear of the governor shaft tube) to set the low speed RPM.
On the "H"& “M” carb, the idle mixture screw (faces to the front just below the idle stop screw) is an air adjusting screw so turning in will richen the mixture and out will lean the mixture.
Repeat the procedure again to make sure “all is well”.

Andy turn out the load screw 1/2 turn and keep trying it. It is lean on the load screw, and might be rich on the idle screw. JimN

Gene, you are too rich, Andy, too lean. Work on all the situations that can cause improper mixture. Too lean, raise float level, adjust load screw, check filters, screens hoses. Too rich, check float level, load screw

Make sure the carb is clean and in good condition. Check the float because all the tractors I work on have a broken float. You might need to adjust the carb and it might solve the problem.

The tractor has new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points & condenser in it. The carburetor was taken into a repair shop a long time ago and the float level set. I never changed the float setting since. I very recently had the carb apart and put in new kit, gaskets and thourghly cleaned the inside and outside. I also cleaned out the air cleaner screens and oil cup.

Andy, When you get your answer, maybe it will solve my problem also.

I have a straight M that is touchy too start. You have to have your hand on the choke lever as it will run about 15 seconds, then sputter. If you get it choked in time, you can keep it going.
Until it warms, you have to choke it each time you start off or it will die.

Once it warms up it is OK unless you pull the throttle back real quick, then it sputters and coughs and will die unless you catch the choke quick or shut the throttle back.

Clean the carb? Fuel flow? guess it could be a combination of things.

Thanks, Gene

That's what my H does when you pull the throttle (speed it up) too. It was warm out yesterday, and it would not start at all with the choke. If you put the choke on half, it will smoke black and almost die, but if you put the choke off again, it runs fine. My H gets a little better with the throttle when it is warmed up, but still not right. I drove the tractor a lot yesterday, and it does not even have the power for 4th or 5th gear when it is like this. It drives fine in R, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd.

Mine has good power in all gears. It hadn't been used much for the last 3-4 years since my dad passed away. My neighbor borrowed it last week to disk some fall food plots and he pulled the heck out of it. Probably good for it. I know the carb. needs cleaning and there is stuff in the sediment bowl. I know it just needs some TLC. I think I will pull the carb off this winter and put a kit in it.

Keep after it.

Gene
