I restored the tractor and had the hyrdraulic block a part and put new o-rings on the pistons and new seals.
Started the tractor and had fluid under pressure spraying from around one of the seals.
Tore it down and found some scratches in the cylinder wall which was spraying(not allowing oring to seal and hold pressure)The scratches were in there before I didnt realize they were that bad.
Question-Is there any type of fix, hone cyclinder wall ? etc.
Or should I be looking for a replacement block?
As always thnaks in advance.
Randy (temporarily frustrated) in Iowa

Evenin Red, The Blue Ribbon Service manual only has service dimensions on the hydraulic pump. I thought it had dimensions on the main piston bores. So my mistake. In any event I would consider a cylinder hone that could be run a hand drill. Keep in mind that the block needs to be completely disassembled because of the honing grit along with metal shavings. I would use a hand squirt oil can with kerosene as a cutting lubricant. I would think you could remove .002 on the bore without running into too much trouble. Your going to need a good inside micrometer and outside mic. You could also use telescoping gage and then check with an outside mic. The whole block will need to be solvent washed after doing all of this ! I have a real good vendor for o-rings also if you need something special ! Let me know !

Mornin Big Red, You can hone those main piston bores but you cant take that much out ! I will have to look and see what the maximun service diameter is. As long as they arent too deep you should be OK !

I think before I junked the block, I would try honing the scratches out regardless of what it took, to make them smooth again....it's worth a try! You could probably go to a well stocked hydraulic shop or maybe a tractor dealership and see if you could buy a thicker O ring. I'd put the stock O ring on and mike it and then try a fatter one on the piston and mike it....see if you can come close to what you need to fit the honed bore.

If those scratches are actually GOUGES, you may be screwed. Then a replacement block would probably be the easiest solution. If you can't find one within reason.....I'd say a good machinist could make you an oversize piston to fit the bore after a vigorous honing to clean it up. There's 7 different ways to skin a cat...start with the easiest one first!

Any ideas on what to hone it with? a small engine or automotive hone may crosshatch it tearing up the chrome bore? or am I too tenative/unsure
thanks Randy

I wouldn't worry about the crosshatching...it's gonna happen..follow it with the finest crocous cloth you can get and polish it bright. If it is indeed chrome plated...that stuff is harder than flint...it may require a diamond hone to cut it. Remember...whatever you do, is going to better than what you have! It's a win-win situation.
