I was pushing some blackberries out of the way today with my B and noticed an intermittent sparking coming from the starter switch. Since I still have a danged drip coming from my shutoff valve, I decided to terminate operations before it terminated me. Red, I believe you had this happen on one of your H's. What causes it and what is the fix? I have taken the switch apart and cleaned it thoroughly, and connections are clean and tight.

Fred when you open the gas shutoff open it all the way most farmall shutoffs might leak if not turned all the way open.If that don't help replace the valve .

At that point, I'd rather my friends call me an ambulance. Okay, I'll stop at my friendly Case/IH store and get a new shutoff valve. ;o)

Fred - Best bet it to replace the switch. I got one recently at Central Tractor - price was about $15 if I recall.

And fix that gas drip!

Fred it sounds like some of the cardboard is missing in that starter switch after you took it apart last time. You are definitely grounding internally to get sparks while NOT activating the switch. NAPA part number is ST6 ECH. I doubt IH still makes those. The NAPA part looks like the original.

#4 battery cable is not really heavy enough Fred. If you are 6 volt, I recommend 1 gauge.

Check for a loose connection on the battery side of the start switch. Either the HOT wire is intermittingly touching the tractor frame (ground) or the starter swich (internal) is not operating properly. NAPA sells a manual switch for a very reasonable price. Stop the fuel drip.
Good luck.

The fuel drip, well, that's been on my list, just moved to the top. But my electrical system is too simple, can't see how I have a problem. All I have is a #4 battery cable coming from the 12V battery to the starter switch (this is a B, remember) and another from the battery to the frame (trans cover bolt). The sparks are definitely coming from the switch, I'm wondering if when I cleaned it, I just made the problem worse. There is a spring in there, maybe when I give it a good bump (on rough ground) the switch is bouncing internally? The quick fix is disconnect the battery once it is started, which is what I will do if I need to start it again before I get the switch fixed. Does Case/IH still have those switches?

sounds like a max $20 fix. Think of the spark cost
