Yesterday I had one of my nephews come out to the woods to help spread rip rap on a creek bank by hand. While he was there, he got lessons on the finer points of tractor driving. I put him on the H first and everything went well, so off to the M. then we went to the F-12 and I told him if he was going to drive it, he had to start it with the crank. By golly he got it going and after getting used to the different shifter pattern he was off and running with a big grin! He can"t wait to come back down and go to work now! I am glad to hear it because I really do need the help. I don"t think he had ever been on any tractor outside of a lawn mower but he handled the H like a pro after some practice. He did get in a hurry with the shifter once and got it locked up but we fixed it in 5 min. He is a freshman at Indiana U.

Speaking of wives, when I was still farming, come planting time my wife would disc ahead with my 856 and I would follow with the D19 with the planter. We'd get done in a hurry.

But, she grew up on a farm driving tractors. I've also seen her bust blue rocks with a .410, but that's another story. (Also why I behave myself).

I have a hobby tractor, not red, but used to have red. Anyway it is my tractor and my wife has been wanting to brush cut with it, finally a nice day came on the weekend, she had a good time and handled it well even around trees and such. So I guess she is hooked too. Most of my tractor driving came before I was 20 but there was something peacefull about it.

Bob, getting to drive a tractor is a reward for some folks. I use load manure all day with a fork just to drive a few minutes to unload.

george, yup, me too. I even enjoyed cleaning out the packed manure in calf pens as it meant driving the tractor, or at least riding along with Tippy - the farm dog along for every trip. My uncle never had a barn cleaner so it was up the planks to dump the wheelbarrow into the New Idea ground-driven spreader. His lineup consisted of a Ford 860 and an 8N, so at least there was some red on the iron. We always ate and slept well.

Al, we had to clean out the stalls in the barns. I sure was glad when we quit using them and tore them out. Got a silage trough and mangers in one barn on concrete floor. I finally talked dad into getting a blade and that helped on the concrete. I remember it being 2 feet deep come spring. Thought I was doing big things though by getting to drive that old tractor for a while. Dad still has that old Case spreader that we used.
