Farmall H Carb

Hi Guys, Me and my Dad were using my 1943 Farmall H to move all our non-running tractors out of the driveway and ito the backyard. My H runs very nice when it is sitting, but it does not have much power for pulling. The carb is clean, new gaskets and kit, new fuel filter (sediment bowl/shut off), clean fuel line and filter. The magneto has new points, condenser, cap and rotor, new spark plugs and wires. New oil and filter, new air cleaner hoses and cleaned air cleaner and new oil in the cup. We adjusted the carburetor. The tractor does not smoke. What I was thinking is maybe it is the carburetor float level. Maybe it has enough gas to run, but not to pull? How do I set the float level? I cannot find my manuals.

Thanks for reading.
Andy.

With the engine warm & running at wide open throttle (WOT), turn high speed mixture screw (on the bottom facing down to the rear) in until the engine begins to starve for fuel. Then turn the screw out until the engine begins to blubber. Now find the "sweet spot" in between the two settings. If you are working the engine (plowing, etc.), then the high speed screw needs to be turned out 1 turn or more beyond the "sweet spot" to be sure the engine isn't starving for fuel and can develop its rated power.

The same procedure can be followed for idle mixture with the addition of the idle stop screw (just to the rear of the governor shaft tube) to set the low speed RPM.
On the "H"& “M” carb, the idle mixture screw (faces to the front just below the idle stop screw) is an air adjusting screw so turning in will richen the mixture and out will lean the mixture.
Repeat the procedure again to make sure “all is well”.

Check for intake manifold leak, this will cause them to run poppy, and lose power. reset valve clearance to .20 cold .17 or .18 warm. My 43 H is a med compression dist burner now on gas, it will lift the front tires off the ground in 4th gear if you let the clutch out to fast at max power. do a compression test and let us know the results. mine is around 95 on all 4. If the compresion is low add a teaspoon of oil and restest. make sure the throttle is wide open and pull the coil wire off so it dont start on accident.

Sometimes it runs kind of "poppy" when you throttle it up, but then it clears out of that fast. Not enough power for 5th, sometimes not even enough for 4th. I had the governor cover off once and everything seemed good, I have been using this H for a long time and never had a governor problem (yet). I will try moving the mag like Jim said, this is the first time I've ran this H with a magneto, I got sold the vertical delco distributor it had on eBay and bought a mag for it.

Thanks.

what happens when you take off the fuel line at the carb? do you get a good flow of fuel? Take the drain plug out of the carb and see if there is fuel flowing there. In addition what Jim mentioned, I would also try these two things. you might have a build up in the tank and even though the fuel filter is new, it could be clogged up restricting the flow of fuel.

It has plenty of clean fuel to the carb.

Thanks.

Andy If the timing is retarded it will idle very well but not run strong. The common replacement of the mag with a distributor was due to that factor. Mags do not have centrifugal advance. Try timing the mag. by turning it in the opposite direction of the rotor rotation (about 1/16 of an inch on the slotted holes at a try. Mark it so if it does not help, you can go back.

1/2 turn out at a time on the main jet of the carb may also improve load power. JimN

I will try that.

Thanks Jim.
