I have a 1949 Farmhall H. It has been sitting for about 4 months due to a battery running down. I replaced the battery...started it up...put in the clutch...attempted to put it into first gear...and heard a horrible grinding sound. I could not put it into gear. Ran like a sewing machine sitting there in nuetral. Need some assistance diagnosing what is wrong and some suggestions on how to fix it. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Common problem on tractors. You need to block the pedal down for a few days. If that works your home free if not start it up in gear and take it for a drive. Hold the pedal down till it pops free. Be sure your in a nice open area when you do that because you will not be able to stop unless you turn off the engine. You can also pull the start off and spray brake cleaner into the clutch, have the pedal blocked down when you do that and turn the engine over a little at a time to get to the whole cluthc area

Brian: Most likely clutch disc stuck on shaft or disc facing stuck to presure plate or flywheel. Do it the easy man's way, tractor not running, hold pedal down in 5th and get someone to tow you with another vehicle. It might turn the engine over in 5th, in that case try 3rd or 4th. In 4 months it can't be stuck that hard. If it were years, I'd say you might have to split the tractor.

I've always wondered if I should just block the clutch in during winter storage (inside) to avoid this problem, even though it's never happened to my H. You think it's good insurance to do so?

Lowell: It can't hurt, when your dad was using that H hundreds of hours per year he quite often got things warmed up enough to evaporate condensation. Same can be said for those plow days you go to, you plow 5,6,7 or 8 hours and your going to evaporate most of the moisture out of the clutch housing. I never blocked a clutch in my life, never even thought about it on the farm. On the farm, I had some tractors parked close to 6 months per winter. Even now, my tractors get several good workouts per year. Following discussion on here, I think the guys having trouble do mainly yard work, never really get the tractor warmed up.

I always figured blocking a clutch compresses the presure plate springs for and extended period. How much that affects the life of them, I not certain, but it has to be a factor. I can tell you, I'll not be blocking my clutches.

Can't hurt, might help. The times I've done it, I blocked it after the tractor ws parked bt still running, thinking that *might* allow the disc to float to some spot between the pressure plate and flywheel. That would lessen the chance of the disc facing bosnidng to anything and, with luck, would give a little play in case the center shuld stick to the shaft. Letting the pedal back out would break it loose in that case.

Block the clutch forward[released position] & Trans in 5th---try rocking one of the rear wheels back & forth. Of course, with engine off & fairly level.

That's an interesting way to spell "Farmhall". I always thought it was spelled "Farmhaul"

Quite possible that the clutch disc had bonde to the face of the flywheel. Four months does't seem like a long time if that is the problem. You could try getting it into gear at low idle or starting it in gear to get it running. If you've got good brakes, once you get it moving under its own power you might be able to break it loose by pushing in the clutch pedal and banging on the brakes to break it loose.
