I've been on the local vol Fire dept for a long time and with the price of heating fuels wood heat is making a comeback and so are the fires.
We were called to a stove fire this morning at 6:30 luckily 2 of us were at the restaurant and were able to respond quickly and save the house with minimum damage.
If you are using wood keep it safe it just takes one mistake to have a bad day.
Safe and happy holidays to all

Fire calls: in reply to Fancy Farm, 11-22-2007 12:22:11
A good reminder. As a former volunteer, I can attest to the fact carelessness is the biggest cause of fire calls. Sadness hit the Wisc. State 4-H program as a leaders some died in a house fire last Sunday a.m. Some smoke detectors had been removed and others had no batteries - a needless loss of life. Know your fire number, call 911 BEFORE any attempts to extinguish a fire yourself, seconds count and it is minutes and miles volunteers and then equipment must travel to arrive at the scene. A smoke detector in every sleeping area; another within six feet of the exterior surface of said door; at the top of every stairway - Wisc. fire code, sadly so often ignored. Detectors are cheap and could make a great present, if not sooner, than under the tree at the latest. One Christmas Eve 3:30 a.m. morning in the mid 80's had me discharging a fire extinguisher onto a dead 13 year old girls body. Take care this time of year and always.

Fancy Farm That's the truth !!! When I moved into this house twenty years ago I was renting it . All it had for heat was a Longwood brand stove in the basement with forced air . It got to be that I was on a first name basis with most of the volunteer firefighters from the nearest two towns . I cleaned the stainless triplewall out at least once a month with a brush ( twentyeight feet from basement to top ) but I still had at least a couple chimney fires a year . Stainless just doesn't get hot enough to keep the gasses from condensing during times of low flame . Most times I judged the redness of the single wall before it got to the triplewall to determine if the 911 call was needed . Dull red - just kept the phone handy , bright red - get everything outside -NOW ! Got rid of that worthless heater a couple years ago when we bought the place and put in a heat pump . Now I want to put in a modern airtight wood furnace or corn/pellet furnace/stove for backup heat . After 15 years of heating with wood I'm not in a big hurry for the woodburner since now I really dislike cutting firewood :) ...Randy
