Magneto Question

This might be a stupid one, but how do I service points & condensor on a magneto on the Cub? In my head I was thinking that without a coil, there were no point or condensor. I've been into the cap end of the mag and didn't see any way inside. Does anyone have a breakdown of this that they can post? Even if my problem is carburetion, I'd like to look at the points to see how clean they are.

Thanks.

To get to the points and condenser on the Cub J4 magneto, you have to remove the rotor and then the plate behind it. I'm not sure if you have to remove the rotor first. It appears from the parts manual that if you remove the three screws, the plate covering the points chamber will come off with the rotor still in place in the plate. According to my parts manual, the plate is held on by 3 screws. My IT manual does not say much about the magneto, so I don't have a procedure to offer. I will note that the rotor on the cub has a gear built into it, so installation of the rotor will be critical to proper timing. I don't know if there is a timing mark on the rotor or not. Whatever, make sure you know what you are doing, because a new rotor is more than $50. The magnetos don't usually give much trouble, so if you have a good hot spark, I would not mess with it except to make sure it is timed correctly. Timing the magneto is easy and is done manually with the tractor not running.

There's a coil on that J4 mag too. The points and condenser should be just behind the cap. Hal
