I have a book coming so don`t tell me to go and buy a book. I have a 400 and don`t know for sure but I think the rear end and trany is the sump for the hydraulic. Am I right? If so how much Hyd oil does it hold? Many thanks and A Merry Christmas to all.

The rearend is seperate from the hydraulic. The hydro reservoir is under the gas tank and takes 2.5 gal. the rear end takes 12-13 gal. their is a filter on the left side of the reservoir with 4 3/16" bolts that hold a filter. pull it and clean it before you put new in.

I don't recall seeing what the capacity is for the hydraulics. I would guess about 2.5 gallons. The filler plug is below the contol valve handles on the right side.

It uses the same fluid as the T.A., but it is an entirely separate system.

I drained & refilled my 400 a couple years ago and remember three drain plugs. I don't remember filling but the one main sump-wonder now did i not fill all sumps??? Georgeky opinion.

Wolfman,

You missed a key word in Boyd's post. Hydraulic. Anyway, the whole center section and rear frame only need to be filled from one point.

Boyd,

Georgeky is correct. It wasn't until the 460-560 did IH eliminate the hydraulic reservoir as a separate component. Hydraulic fluid (tractor fluid or HyTran) is drawn from the rear frame where it also lubricates the TA, transmission, and rear end. IPTO has its own oil.

No the rear is is not the sump. It is under the steering post. Has a dipstick on the right side at the bottom where resivoir meets the TA housing. If you want send me an email, and I will send you pic showing it.
