My H is sliding out of 5th gear. This only happens when it is coasting or decelerating. The transmission seems to shift OK. But does have a growl. All other gears are fine. What and how do I look for?

The problem could be as simple as a broken detent spring, but the growl indicates something more severe.. Since the transmission as a growl, you may have a bad mainshaft, 4 & 5th slider, and shift fork.. I suggest you first take the trans deck off of the tractor, and check to see if the detent spring of ball is bad.. While you have the deck off, check the main shaft for wear on the splines.. you can also try to lift the front of the mainshaft to see if the front bearing cage bearings are bad. if the shaft moves up and down easily, then the bearings are bad, which may have caused your problem..
