lots of play in steering. I have front bolster disassembled. bearings good, bushings good, steering shaft worm good. the worm gear has soom wear but not a lot. shakes too bad to drive in 5th gear.checked for warped hubs and warped wheels, all good. new tires. I have about a quarter round of play in steering wheel. Does anybody have any suggestions as how to get " Big Red to smooth out? Thanks in advance

If your bearings are good, the slop is either in the gear box at the top (usually end play in the worm gear allowing it to move forward and back instead of turn the sector gear) or in the Shafts that connect the steering wheel. The connections from shaft to U-joint are often loose (and dangerous unless fixed)
The joints are rebuildable. A tapered caster wedge is also a good plan. It fits above the lower bolster and tilts the wheels back a few degrees. They can be found on Ebay or Steel Wheel Ranch, I would also look on this site for parts and used for sale items. JimN

Sure,
Sorry about the delay, I got busy fixing my CJ3B Jeep.
The wedge is an IH part that can be found in the parts diagram for your tractor. caseih.com then follow the search for parts links.
It is a wedge of (probably) nodular iron that is the size and shape of the top of the casting where the lower bolster casting and spindles attach to the upper bolster shaft. It is about 3/4" thick on the front edge, and maybe a quarter inch on the trailing edge. It causes the front wheels to have caster. It is installed by (jacking the tractor up safely) and removing the four bolts that hold the lower section on. (there are different length bolts in different holes, be careful with that) longer bolts may be needed. Just add to the bolt length the thickness of the plate. Use grade 8 bolts!!

End play is removed with appropriate shims under the plug, on the outer bearing rave only (they look like thin, narrow washers) New bearings may be needed at some point in the wear repair.

The rims can be centered using a piece of stiff wire to make a pointer to check runout of the wheel. I nail a piece of #9 wire to a chunk of oak 4X4 about 2' long. Run one tire up on a (different)4X4 to raise the other tire. Then loosen the bolts until it can be moved a little, then adjust until it is true. Then tighten the bolts to keep it dron moving. Good luck, JimN

Yep, put it back together and center your rims to hubs. Lots of times this is the problem. May take 2 or 3 trys to get them right, but it will most likely help.
