What is the difference between a 450 gas and a SMTA gas. My 450 has a 281 4.6 L engine, 18,305 made? A lot of people say the smta is worth more. What is the diff. Horse power, torque, size, longer lasting? Thanks Bill

CNKS said it well. The 450 is one of the best values in IH tractors unless you are selling it. They will appreciate well, but the shine is on the SMTA SMDTA.

I agree - except I would have included the 400 too.

If you don't need quite as much horse power I'd look real hard at the 300-350 models for the same reasons given except they are much easier on fuel.

There was more 450 made than your total.
I guess a SMTA brings more because a bigger amount of people want a SMTA compared to a 450.

The SMTA brings a higher price because it was only made for one year and was the first IH tractor to have a TA and live PTO, which in 1954 was a major improvement. The 450 has about 9 more HP than the SMTA and better hydraulics, along with fast hitch and other improvements. It is a better tractor, if you actually want to use it, but it will not command the price of an SMTA. The 450 was the last in a series of 4 cylinder tractors that began with the 1939 M.
