We had 6 inches of snow to push this morning, so got at it around 6:30 A.M. Got started & thought I saw a flash of lightning--no, can't be--car lights on the highway. Little later--more flashes--definitely lightning. In February with snow on the ground? Yes. Before I got done, the lightning was worse than most summertime storms. Then the rain cut loose--heavy downpour. Temperature was around 25 degrees. Just wondering if others have had a vicious wintertime thunderstorm? I've seen one or two lightning flashes in the winter before, but not like the stuff we had this morning.

Here in Southeastern NC it rarely snows, but on our last white Christmas in 1989 (and that was the first one in 125 years) there was a lot of lightning with the snow. A lot of old people say if you see lightning in the winter it will snow in 10 days or less. Sometimes it"s true, sometimes not.

I saw three waterspouts in a line while running a ferry on Long Island Sound off of New Haven, CT in February about 10 years ago. Never heard of a waterspout in New England before, never mind in the dead of winter!

And yes, have had thunder snow also.

We get them in KS some including this winter. Usually when there is are rain/sleet/ice/snow storm lines close together. The upper level disturbance puts out thunder & lightning as the precip falls as rain and then changes closer to the ground when it hits the cold and turns to ice/sleet/snow.

Odd weather for sure. Looking at NO Gator's comment--What's snow? reminded me of the time the wife's relation were up from Galveston & saw an ice scraper & couldn't figure what it was for. Difference in territory.

Yes, I have seen winter thunderstorms here in eastern Nebraska. Fairly rare, but they do occur.
