Farmall B question

I"m not too familiar with the farmalls, but I am just purchases a house with 9 acres (mostly wooded) and I need a working tractor. I found a Farmall B. The guy put a wide front on it (nicely fabricated), has a loader with down pressure, and fabricated a 3 point hitch which he used to mow 3 acres. It starts and runs fine and only has one small hydralic seal leak. The tractor is a little smaller than what I was really looking for. I need one to scrape my 700" driveway (I need to remove rocks and smooth it out) and then to rake it. Also the loader will come in handy, but not sure how hard it will be without powersteering. Simply, for $2k, is it worth it and do what I need?

This is a picture of my B with a loader and as you can see what everyone is talking about, they are a pretty light weight loader to do anything with except to "play" lightly.

And this is the PTO driven hydraulic pump that is used on this tractor.

Are you sure it is a B? Bs did not have hydraulics standard from the factory. I have one with hydraulics, but it is a PTO driven pump and it is a PIA, the handle is in the way all the time, and being it is not a live PTO, you don't have hydraulics all the time. In my opinion, he wants more than what it is worth, if it were me,I would take my $2,000.00 and find an H or M with 3 point, and loader, you will have a lot more tractor. There are others, I am just partial to the letter series tractors.

Send a picture, if the loader and front end is solid and has a live hydralic pump, one driven off the front of engine, it would be OK, if the hydrallic pump is on the PTO, it would be a pain. You would have to carry a counter balance weight on the 3PT for traction and easier steering. As other people have said they were rarely used for loader work, so I don't know how much you would use it or how it would stand up to rough use.

We have a B and love it. Having said that I would pass on this tractor. It is not original and is cobbled together to make it do things it was not intended for. There are too many good original tractors that were intended for what you want.

James has a good idea. The B was built too light to be able to stand up to loader abuse, though some guys do have a loader on a B, and it seems to me the rear axles and drop boxes are also too light to carry much weight. The hydraulics would have to be homemade because they never had hydraulics from the factory.

The B is a good reliable little machine that can pull like crazy for only having 18 horses. It's also low and stable, making it safer on slopes.

There are a lot of small simple reliable old tractors out there that have a factory three point and a strong enough frame to take a loader.Someone else on the board will have a good idea as to make/model. Jim

I agree with these guys - this great little row crop tractor does not convert well to utility, front end loader, etc.
