i have a 340 Utility with a 12 volt conversion. I have timed this tractor a number of times, I put new points and set to .020, new plugs(autolites) and plug wires. new distributor cap/rotor. the coil was still the same 6 volt as was on the tractor before, i added a ballasr resistor from napa. Tractor starts right up, sounds great, but under load or if you drive it begins to miss a bit, i have checked fuel flow and carb. everything seems great. HERES where things get a bit weird for me. I started tractor , put my ear up close to ditributor and coil area, and thought i heard a little snapping noise. I shut the lights off in the shop, and to my surprize you could see little sparks coming from coil end where coil wire goes into coil, also noticed little blue color coming from each of the spark plug wires where rubber boot goes over spark plug.... what is going on here,Bad coil , maybe bad ballast resistor, im not sure what to do here... thanks for any ideas.

Use some clear silicone seal to build up a ridge completely around the coil nose in back of where the nipple goes on the coil. This will eliminate the arcing you are getting in the coil area. We used this fix on the 450 way back when, & it's still holding. Make sure that the coil to dist. cap wire is good. When the dist. to coil wire is bad, it creates a high resistance & the high voltage will take the easiest path to ground. Make sure the coil nose is dry before putting the silicone on.

if all the wires all correctly placed as to the diagram, all you need is a 12 volt coil and make sure the wires are pushed down all the way onto the plugs and in the cap. I have car plug wires on mine so when you push them in they snap in place and last a lot longer.

If you are going to stay with 12V get a 12V coil and eliminate the resistor, one less thing to cause problems.

I agree EXCEPT for the fact that a system set up with a 6-Volt coil and ballast resistor AND a starting bypass WILL give a hotter spark during cranking than a "true" 12-Volt coil.

That is why the factory 12-Volt sysems were mostly set up that way.

i found a small crack on the coil, the ridge that runs around where you connect coil wire. i bought all new wires, ( TSC COPPER CORE- 7MM ) came as a kit. should i replace with new wires, and coil?? could i get a 12 volt coil with buil in resistor, and bypass ballast resistor or shoul i just get a replacement 6 volt coil, thanks guys. Jim

If your setup has a "starting bypass", keep a 6-Volt coil and use a resistor.

If NO starting bypass (most likely), get a TRUE 12-Volt coil, such as the NAPA 14SB.

Incidently, there is NO "built-in resistor" in the TRUE 12-Volt coils, just MORE turns of wire in the primary winding.

how do you tell if it has a "starting bypass"?

The common way a starting bypass is set up is to run a run a wire from the "R" terminal on the starter solenoid (if so equipped) to the ignition switch side of the coil, so full battery voltage is sent to the coil while cranking, bypassing the ballast resistor.

Dave, i found a small crack, seems like that is the spot also where i see the spark--eeeee's . the crack on the coil is located where you plug wire into coil. thanks, Jim

Are you running non-resistor plugs and wires?

Copper core wires are what you want for these old beasts. You'rs "good to go" in that department.

What spark plugs are you using?
