Work on each cylinder independently.
As the exhaust valve just begins to start opening adjust the intake. As the intake just closes adjust the exhaust. Turn it with the plugs out, crank is best, but bumping the starter is OK. They are front to back

I used a pipe wrench on the PTO shaft when I set the tappets on my Allis C. As long as you have the plugs out, you can make some pretty careful adjustments...

Just be sure to take the wrench off or disengage the PTO before trying to start her again. :)

thanks, ill give it it a try. i adjusted the tappets once, but i just made sure there was no pressure on each rod , by turning motor with hand crank little by little. i started at front, worked back, butagain im new to tractor mechanics and sure have lots to learn. thanks, Jim
