I'm Getting ready to reassemble my C123 in my farmall 100. My question is am I supposed to put some kind of lube/grease/oil on the o-ring seal at the bottom of my sleeves?

I'm thinking yes but I don't want to put on any thing that might deteriorate the rubber.

There were no instructions of any kind in with the engine parts, it was IH NOS

Thanks for the replys. Brian

I use a silicone lube specified for use in assembly of Eaton Road Ranger truck transmissions. It is extremely slippery and will not dry out like soap.

The o-rings used to seal your sleeves will not be damaged by using oil. If they were not able to withstand exposure to oil they would fail in use because they have to seal oil from the bottom and coolant from the top.

what do you guys think the rubber seals in your wheel cyl.and master cyl. are made of? rubber seals! do you put oil in your brake system? try it, see how long those seals last! you will be o/h ing pretty quick. as far as i know its either soap or brake fluid. no petroleum based products.ihave used both soap and brake fluid and have never had a problem. let me know your reasoning with brake fluid and rubber seals, i am curios now,how does brake fluid damage rubber seals?

anti-seize. Since I've been putting anti-seize on all my bolt threads, I daub a little on the o-ring. Is this a no-no or doesn't matter? I think anti-seize has an aluminum base.

Dish soap. The o-ring that seals against coolant can be deteriorated if oil is used on it.

No brake fluid! This is very very bad on rubber seals. Use dish detergent like others have said. It works well. Chris

Oatey Pipe Lubricant works pretty good. Commonly used in assembling O-ring type joints on PVC sewer pipe.

Dont use brake fluid. Any soap or even the assy lube you put on the bearings.

Use dish dertergent the brand makes no difference. Make sure that block area is clean where the new seals are installed. Do the recessed area in the top of the block where sleeves sit. Hal

The soap is the only angle. Petrolium based lubricants make them slick but are not good for the O rings!!!!! Soap makes them slick and does not hurt them!!!--and it is cheap
