Saw something today I thought I would never see.. I had carried a load of junk to the local scrap buyer, and the owner and I are standing there talking. A guy drives up on a 766 diesel (he said it was a '65 model), takes it across the scales (9k), and sells it for scrap! Now, it was no cream puff, had been sitting outside for a while, but he had driven it approx. 4-5 miles to get it there.. It will probably be cut up next week. I may go back tomorrow and try to get some pics.. I'm not really a "tractor" guy, I do have a '49 Model H, but I hate to see good parts go to china to make junk..

Maybe it wasn't a 766, maybe it was a 756. What years were those made? Either way, a running tractor of any kind is too good to cut up for scrap, in my opinion. I'll go by there monday and try to get some pics, and see if the scrapyard guy is ok with me posting his number here if anyone wants to call on it. I'd buy it, but don't have the cash available at the moment..

Brian: 706 would have ran from 63-67. 756 from 68 to early 72 and 766 72 until 76. That's roughly it for all of them.

Brian: The guy with the 766 wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. Since 766s weren't built until 1972 he did well finding a 65 model.

For sure,

Something seems a little "wacky" here. Don't suppose it might have been a 706?

Those 766Ds are getting just a bit hard to locate and even a skeleton brings a fair price anymore.

Allan: You may have been right with your first post. It may be so hot they have cut the 766 up before dawn. We have those same rules, there are ways around them

Dunno,

Nobody in his right mind would chop a 766D that is running.

I've seen gassers that left a little to be desired, but those diesel models are getting to be kind of an "item".

Allan: My sentiments, exactly and 766D was one of the better ones, but who knows what economic conditions drive some folks decissions. Maybe the 766 is so hot, only safe place for it is in the scrap heap. The dealer might at least sell someone the 360 diesel, be good for rebuilding a low hour gasser. Why it would even look good and work good under the hood of that hydro gasser that causes you some grief. How quick can you get to Alabama.

No, here in AL you have to provide all kinds of info (vehicle tag #, driver's license, etc. on file) before they will pay you for anything. Had so many people bringing in stolen copper and such a law was passed requiring the info. So, I don't think it was stolen..

Happy to report that the tractor was saved. Went back today to get some pics and it was gone. The scrapyard owner swapped it for the equivalent weight in junk cars to another guy sat. morning! At least it didn"t go to China...!
