I have a 1948 M that starts when clutch is pushed in. Will not crank if clutch is engaged. If running engine dies when clutch is engaged and trans is in N. Tows OK. Has M&W 9-speed. Has IH live Hyd. Don't know if pump guts are still in belly pump. Does anybody have any ideas? Thankyou for any help you can give. Armand

Hi , I just went through this same problem . I won't say for sure that it will be the problem in yours . I have a 9-speed in mine too . What happened was a bearing fell out of the pilot bearing and lodged in the constant mess gear between two teeth . I started it in neutral like I usually do . Then let out the clutch to let it warm up and the bearing lodged in the teeth stopped it dead . It wouldn't go forward or back under it's own power but it towed just fine in neutral . The easiest thing to do might be to pull the belt pulley or cover and look in there with a bright light . ...Randy

If it tows OK, what must be done to tow it. If nothing, and it rolls in neutral clutch pedal up against the platform, I would say things in the very front (possibly the 9 speed) of the tranny are going to be a problem. The output shaft gears in the trans always turn with the final drive. The the input shaft drives the constant mesh gear, that gear drives the counter shaft and all its gears. If the ( speed is partially in gear, or internally in two gears, it may be the problem. JimN

If tractor will roll in neutral with clutch engaged I don't think it would be stuck in two regular gears. If the M&W shifting is working correct there should be a neutral position between low and high range. If everything works as it should you should be able to put main transmission in neutral, engage pto and move M&W shifter untill the pto shaft will turn by hand.
If you can't do that the M&W shifting splines may be locking onto both constant mesh range gears at the same time, due to breakage or other, or belley pump locked or something between reverse idler gear and counter shaft.

Sounds like it is hung up in two gears at the same time. The end of the gear shift is probably worn down from years of use. Check the archives to read up on procedure for removing the gear shift and aligning the shift rails.
