Farmall snowplow fleet

Link to images of part of a fleet of Farmall-based snowplows a local contractor uses for municipal sidewalk clearing. Most of them are H's and M's, though there's some 3/400's and a scattering of later models. Altogether there's 40+ of these machines.

Tractors are narrowed to sidewalk width by mounting the wheels dish in as close as they can go. Then the outboard axles are burned off at the wheel hub. Plows are front suspended with frame members beneath the belly to carry plow thrust back to the drawbar. All tractors are fitted with lights, and heat housers are provided for a bit of operator comfort.

An impressive collection of still-working Farmalls!

Fargo, I do not know where you are located and you did not post your email, but I know where there are two V-plows that were formally tractor mounted. One even has left and right wings on it. They are located in Haverhill, MA.

When I was a kid going to school in Rochester in the 50's, they used to plow the sidewalks with H's and M's. I wonder if these are still the same ones.

I'd say that fleet is impressive! I'm really impressed with the blade. Never seen anything like it(at least on a tractor).

Bob - There's an Orleans County Farmer near me with an identical winter gig. He has a garage & yard on Stonewood Avenue in Rochester, near the Lumberyard, loaded with customized H's and M's for contract plowing for the city. I'd think this would have to be the same guy - Is it?

Are those custom made plows? A true testiment to the durability and Quality of IH.

Not sure if those are custom made plows. I've seen similar plows mounted on tractors, crawlers and even Bombardier tracklayers clearing sidewalks in other upstate NY towns.

I live right in the city of Rochester, NY. Although it is hard to tell with all the sidewall flaps that keep the tractors warm, it appears our sidewalks are plowed by similarly equipped Farmalls.

Douglas - Those are the very plows you see on the Rochester NY sidewalks!

Bob have you tried steering one of those? I would think they would need the power steering add on.

Red - Suspect running one of those without power steering would give you a hell of an upper body workout! The plows are massive, fabricated out of heavy plate and cantilevered way out ahead of the front wheels....

I'll bet they steer hard, but I'll side with you and say they probably aren't much worse than an M with a mounted corn picker or the cultivators!

Yeh, Red, that is a good question. With no counterweights, no wheel weights, tricycle front, narrow rear, heavy front overhang when plow is up, and high center of gravity, it is a wonder that all the mufflers and steering wheels are straight. They probably need to be parked tightly together so they don't tip over.

Those tractors are set up with rear wheel weights mounted inside of the wheels - can see the wheel weights in the side photo. Also the rear tires are loaded. And there's a massive sub-frame mounted under the tractor belly between the front wheels and the drawbar. So I doubt these tractors are near as top heavy as they appear. They transport 'em (and sometimes even plow snow) in 5th gear - an amazing sight!

Another neat feature: They're set up so the tractors can be double-headed for moving very deep snow and drift breaking. The plow on one tractor is linked to the drawbar on the tractor ahead - you wind up with two tractors connected "elephant style". A pair of these will effortlessly clear packed snow deep as deep as the V-plow.

I think Red's right about the steering however - it's gotta be an SOB with all that weight out front...
