I have a 1947 Cub. This getting to be one them that make you want pull your hair (do not much to pull out). When i first saw tractor it started and run okay. carb seem to be running a little rich nothing bad. Did not start right off when been sitting for a day or two. temp at night mid to upper 30"s ,day mid 50 range. to give some idea AS TO WHAT i working with. After three or for trips back to tractor came to an agreement on price of tractor and made araingements to get tractor. About a week later I went to get tractor and bring home tractor would not start carb flooding bad leaking gas when when gas turned on, thought float sticking . Loaded tractor up with out starting and brought home. Got carb off to clean looked pretty rough, decided to get a rebuilt carb. While waiting for rebuilt carb checked ingition, very weak spark, points burned up. Done complet ingition replacement. 6 volt ingition with resitor for 12v battery. plugs, wires, points, cond, rotor cap, coil. got good spark now. With rebuilt carb on fresh clean gas the only way I can get tractor to do any thing is to over choe and try to flood and it will fire one or two time and get fast enough to relase the starter. at my wits end help!!!! I am almost to the point of saY SOMETHING ABOUT THE LINEAGE OF THIS CUB. Been working with Farmalls for many years and thought I was pretty good guess I"ll have to eat a little humble pie

Don't overlook the possibility that one or more of the valves might be stuck in the open position.....That is one that can cause you to lose your mortal soul!

We all get tired and frustrated, and since you pulled the wires to check spark, double check to make sure you put the plug wires back on in the proper firing order. Out of order would act like that too.

Hold your hand over the throat over the carburetor
to see if there's good suction on your hand. You need good intake manifold to suck that gas into the engine. You will need someone to start the tractor while you do this. If there's not much suction you probably should check the compression.
That will give you an idea what shape the engine is in. Worn rings, cylinders and valves not seating are all related to poor compression. Hal

just a shot in the dark, but check your timing and see if its ok. if it is, pull the spark plugs, get a pump oil can and put some marvel mystery oil in it, give each cylinder a couple of squirts. hand rank the engine over a few times, then replace the plugs and try and start it. could be the rings are sticky and the compression is a little low, if it fires up, try adding mystery oil to the engine oil and throw some in the gas tank too. run the snot of it for a while to clean it up.
