450 transmission trouble

I have a Farmall 450 gas. I was pushing snow a couple weeks ago and got to the end of the driveway and my transmission stuck. When I let the clutch out it dies and wont budge. The shifter lever will move, but even when I move the shifter to neutral position the engine dies when i let out the clutch.

I pulled it up the the barn with the clutch in, so the pedal works. Sometimes when I start it and let out the clutch it"ll move just a bit but not too far, and eventually the engine dies.

Does this sound like major trouble?
Thanks

Man I cant believe the wealth of info on this site!
I pulled off the shifter, lined up the rails, replaced the shifter, a 15 minute process in the rain, then started and drove the tractor into the barn. I've learned so much on this forum the last couple years, thanks for all the help!

Something like this happened to my M a couple months ago . It's all been rebuilt now . What happened was the pilot bearing failed and a roller fell out and got jammed into the teeth of the constant mesh gear and locked up the counter shaft to the input shaft . The main shaft would still turn so it was able to be towed in neutral . I'm not sure how the 450 tranny is put together but if it's similar to the M's then you might want to look inside to see what's up . It seems to me that if it was stuck in two gears it wouldn't move no matter what position the clutch was in . If you were able to move it with the clutch disengaged then it's not the gears . If it's like the M then the main shaft turns with the differential , the main shaft has all the sliding gears on it , with it in two gears you get no movement of the differential . That's if it's built like an M . Somebody will enlighten me and you about that . So , if it would only move with the clutch in you have a problem someplace else . Can't help with that . Good luck ! ...Randy

I would think that it is not in the transmission if you can roll it with the clutch in. Do not know enough about live power clutches such as the 300, 350, 400, 450, 460 and 560 to think through the clutch dilema. What do others think?

I recommend using the gearshift lever to line up the forks. I shifted a M out of 4th gear to fast and the gear slipped in to 5th with the gearshift in netural. Got a nice crome bar out of the tool box to fix the problem and dropped it down into the transmission. Heard it balance on the bottom of the tranny case. You never seen a teenage boy let out on the clutch so slow waiting for that bar to get into a couple of gears. Never did.

are you sure your not just stuck in 2 gears at once? unbolt your gearshift and pull it out. look and see if the notches in the shifter rails are lined up. if not take a small pry bar and line up the 3 rails in neutral, then install shifter and away you go.hopefully this is it.
